The date was chosen to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4 May 1886. A protest march in support of the eight-hour work day turned violent when police fired on the crowd, killing several demonstrators. In the aftermath, four anarchists were convicted of murder, even though no one knew who threw the bomb. In 1889, the first congress of the Second International, an international organization of socialist parties, declared May 1st “International Workers’ Day” to commemorate the Haymarket affair.
